Two years later, an aviation engineer identified a method that would enable a water jet to cut steel.
Throughout the 1960s, a number of people introduced their own variations of the water jet cutter. Many of these incorporated changes to the nozzle head. Machines developed during this time could cut through other materials, such as wood, glass and stone, with increasingly higher levels of accuracy.
The 1980s saw the creation of an abrasive water jet nozzle that could be used for cutting, which was introduced by an engineer named Mohamed Hashish. During the 1990s, a Michigan professor named Norman Franz worked with a manufacturing company on an industrial water jet cutter. With this innovation, a company called Flow Industries experimented with adding sand to the process to create a white finish for a piece of metal that had been cut. This led the way to the discovery that abrasive water jet systems had the ability to make cuts in ceramics and metals.
