How Water Jet Cutting Services in San Francisco, CA Are Being Used for New Construction

Over the last several years, there has been a major boom in the construction and development industry. With so many new buildings and developments going up all across the country, there is a lot of demand for a wide range of construction services, including water jet cutting services in San Francisco, CA. Believe it or not, water jet cutting is actually used for a wide range of new construction applications. Water jet technology has only been around for a few decades, but the process is being used for more and more applications in the growing construction industry.

Water jet basics

When they were first developed as a commercial product in the 1970s, water jets were used almost exclusively for cleaning applications. However, as abrasive water jet technology emerged, a whole new world of applications opened up for water jets. Water jet cutting offers a number of advantages over traditional tools and machinery. Not only is the process cleaner and more environmentally friendly, but it also uses material more efficiently and doesn’t require any kind of sharpening like traditional cutting techniques. For all of these reasons, water jets have become popular in the construction industry for a wide range of applications:

  • Material cutting: The primary use of water jet cutting when it comes to new construction is for material cutting. Abrasive water jets can be used to slice through everything from heavy steel beams to glass, precisely and consistently. While using water jet cutting for steel beams often takes longer than using industrial saws, it negates the need for finishing and also doesn’t require any kind of blade sharpening. In most cases, the time saved on machine maintenance and material finishing is sufficient to offset any extra time spent on water jet cutting.
  • Paint removal: In areas with older buildings and structures, lead-based paints are very common. In order to prep a site for new construction or a renovation, old paint must be safely removed to prevent negative health outcomes. Water jet cutting can be used to remove paint without resulting in the kind of airborne dust and contamination that sandblasting does.
  • Concrete removal: In some cases, a builder might want to maintain part of a concrete structure while removing old, damaged portions of the concrete. Water jet cutting makes this possible and can effectively remove deteriorating concrete without causing any structural damage to the remaining material.
  • Decorative inlays: Decorative features are a common element of new construction, and water jet cutting is widely used to produce them. It can be used to cut out a precise pattern or decorative design on virtually any surface.
